The process of converting a petrol or diesel campervan into an electric vehicle involves several key steps. It requires an in-depth understanding of both the original vehicle’s engineering and the specific electrical systems being installed, making it a task best left to professionals. Here’s a broad overview of how the process works:

  1. Removal of the Internal Combustion Engine: The first step is to remove the petrol or diesel engine, along with related systems such as the exhaust, fuel tank, and radiator. This leaves a space under the hood for the new electric motor and its associated components.

  2. Installation of the Electric Motor: An electric motor is then installed in the campervan. This is often coupled directly to the existing transmission (if the vehicle has one), allowing the motor to drive the wheels. The type and size of motor needed will depend on the weight of the vehicle and the desired performance.

  3. Battery Installation: The most important part of an electric vehicle is the battery pack, which provides the power needed to drive the motor. These battery packs are often installed where the fuel tank used to be, or they may be spread out in different areas to better distribute the weight.

  4. Installation of the Controller: The controller is a crucial component that regulates the power flow between the battery and the motor. It interprets input from the accelerator pedal and adjusts the motor’s output accordingly.
